Job Summary

The University Web and User Experience Designer works under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Web Development and receives art direction from the Senior Director of Creative Strategy in partnership with Director of Digital Marketing and Communications. This position is a key member of the communications team responsible for the visual design of the sjsu.edu website. The incumbent continually develops and designs the look and feel driving the San José State University web presence; integrates user experience design best practices; and contributes to content strategy. The position is responsible for the design and maintenance methods, production and visual development of the sjsu.edu homepage and news pages, top-level pages within the site map, all pages and sites managed by University Communications and Marketing and enterprise-wide web. The incumbent also provides consultation, assistance and web development/design support to other university departments as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the core SJSU website with continually updated graphics, multimedia and visual user-interface improvements.
  • Support the visual development of communications outlets including the university’s social media pages, SJSU NewsCenter, Washington Square digital magazine, and various university webpages per key initiatives/projects.
  • Design web interfaces and collaborates with the communications team and other stakeholders on the development of interface pattern libraries.
  • Apply universal design principles ensuring accessibility of digital content and applications.
  • Contribute to web project planning, strategy and documentation.
  • Collaborate with developers on components requiring development, scripting and programming.
  • Collaborate with technical and creative contributors to coordinate changes to SJSU’s interface design patterns and templates.
  • Create web and interface concept sketches, flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to support the design process.
  • Conduct user research using formal and informal methods, interpret user needs, gather requirements by consulting stakeholders, analyze web analytics, and assess current interfaces.
  • Align content strategy initiatives with user experience project plans.
  • Work closely with the digital and creative team on content sourcing, requirements, taxonomies, and metadata.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of content management systems, WordPress templates and email marketing tools
  • Knowledge of universal design principles and web accessibility standards
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and CMS systems
  • Strong graphic design skills and artistic ability to translate communication needs into design
  • Knowledge of interface, photo and graphic design software
  • Comprehensive knowledge of visual design principles as applied to online media
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with writers, photographers, and programmers, as well as with colleagues of all technical abilities from none to robust
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Ability to understand university level curriculum concepts and convey them graphically
  • Knowledge of experience designing and crafting user experiences that are responsive
  • Ability to sketch or prototype interactions and design concepts
  • Knowledge of user research techniques and usability testing
  • Knowledge of combining key research findings to create personas, use cases, and user journeys
  • Knowledge of web analytics software

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study
  • Three years of experience supporting information systems and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with interface, photo and graphic design software
  • Experience wireframing and prototyping interactions and design concepts
  • Experience with HTML/CSS and WordPress

Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,167/month - $7,000/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,678/month - $11,547/month
