Job Description:

TES Staffing is currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Accountant to support the Rochester City School District through the end of the 2025 school year . This is an entry-level accounting position that involves performing general bookkeeping duties, reviewing and posting financial entries, and preparing standard financial reports. The role requires the ability to work with both automated and manual accounting systems and to follow established accounting procedures. The Junior Accountant will report directly to a higher-level staff member and may oversee clerical staff as needed. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This position is distinguished from an Accountant position in that it is a semi-professional role that does not involve the preparation of financial reports. The work is performed under general supervision, and the employee follows prescribed accounting methods while receiving guidance from higher-level staff.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

The Junior Accountant will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Review and post accounting entries in the computerized system, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the general ledger.
  • Assist in maintaining and recording departmental expenditures and budget line accounts.
  • Deposit money to the appropriate accounts.
  • Reconcile receipts, expenditures, and deposits with internal clerical or accounting staff, as well as with banking institutions.
  • Prepare departmental and fiscal operating reports using existing templates and forms.
  • Complete information on reports and vouchers, and audit reports prepared by others prior to submission.
  • Enter details into invoices, claims, payroll entries, and other required documents.
  • Contact internal departments, municipalities, and businesses to resolve accounting matters.
  • Work on special projects to support revenue maximization or cost reduction under the guidance of higher-level accounting personnel.
  • Design and use spreadsheets and databases within existing software to meet accounting needs.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of general bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing principles and methods.
  • Familiarity with internal checks and controls.
  • Ability to use an automated accounting system and perform accurate data entry.
  • Proficiency in designing and maintaining spreadsheets and databases within existing software programs.
  • Ability to reconcile accounts and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Strong mathematical ability and attention to detail.
  • Good judgment and a professional demeanor.
  • Physical condition adequate for the responsibilities of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with an Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; OR
  • (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, or Business Administration that included a minimum of 15 semester credit hours in accounting; OR
  • (C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Economics, Finance, or Business Administration that included a minimum of 15 semester credit hours in accounting, plus one year of full-time or part-time equivalent paid experience in accounting, auditing, or bookkeeping; OR
  • (D) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

Note: Candidates who meet the qualifications under (B) or (C) must submit a transcript or itemized list of completed coursework at the time of application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid New York State driver's license or the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position is required upon appointment.
