Job Description and Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs or their administrator designee, the Librarian, C.F. performs difficult professional work in connection with selecting, cataloging, loaning, or the reference use of books and other library materials. The Librarian maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Departments of Corrections; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches incarcerated persons for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs. The Librarian possesses working knowledge of the principles, trends, and practices of professional library work; modern library methods, techniques, and terminology; standard reference materials, library tools, guides, and indexes; library purposes, trends, and organization.  The Librarian applies professional knowledges to the practical problems of the job; establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with library users, co-workers, supervisors, and others contacted during the course of work; analyzes situations accurately and takes effective action; speaks and writes effectively. All employees must exhibit maturity, good judgment, tact, pleasing personality, and neat personal appearance; sympathetic understanding of and willingness to work with the resident population of the institution. Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
