This is a paid internship, working 16 hours per week from January 21, 2025 through June 27th, 2025. Current Salary is $18.67 per hour.

The KQED Food & Check, Please! Bay Area engagement intern is a fundamental role within KQED’s growing food team, providing insight, research, and action to our audience engagement activities, including social media communications, community interaction, influencer outreach, event planning, and more. The engagement intern is a core member of the engagement team, offering ideas and creativity to a small but nimble crew.

The intern will help with the promotion and outreach of Check, Please! Bay Area across both broadcast and digital properties; general news and reporting from the KQED Food Read desk; and pre- and post-production efforts, as needed. We encourage applicants to bring their unique passions and interests to the table and work with us to find an opportunity for growth that is tailored to their career goals.

KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This will enable us to better serve and reflect the Bay Area through diverse and inclusive storytelling.

We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color,  people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.

The mission that drives us:

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media.   We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role requires working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working in the field. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Essential Functions:

  • Organize and manage audience communications and engagement activities with Digital Engagement Manager
  • Contribute to research, including gathering information around chefs, guests, restaurants, organizations, and media companies
  • Produce social media toolkits in collaboration with the Engagement Manager, including the creation of social media sharelines and graphics
  • Attend weekly editorial and engagement team meetings
  • Support management of KQED Food’s social media accounts (as aligned with set strategy) to engage with audience and reach digital goals
  • Pitch and lead a digital engagement project centered around your interests!
  • Review raw footage from location shoots and drone footage, identifying best shots for promos and social media
  • Assist producers on location shoots on show taping days, including behind-the-scenes photography support (where appropriate)
  • Assist with copy prep and proofreading for Check, Please! Bay Area marketing effort
  • Assist Engagement Producer in creating original digital content (memes, GIFs, vertical video, imagery, graphics) for social media (as assigned)
  • Evaluate online submissions and vet guest and restaurants for next season (including their social media accounts)

Knowledge/Experience Required:

Even if you’re developing these skills, we encourage you to apply! Many of these requirements can be learned on the job.

  • A genuine passion for food and drink, as well as a working knowledge of the Bay Area culinary scene
  • Agility in using digital tools like Google Drive (Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides) as well as social media and digital video publishing platforms
  • Strong online research skills, with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently, learn quickly, and balance multiple assignments
  • Excellent oral, written, and online communication skills with a high comfort level for making new connections
  • Strong cultural competence and sensitivity in communicating with and about diverse communities
  • Eagerness to learn and engage with diverse communities

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • Ability to shoot and edit additional video and/or photos
  • Knowledge of WordPress
  • Strong desire for excellence in written communications and developing a brand voice
  • Passionate about supporting communities in telling their own stories from their own experiences.
  • Strong interest in public media, broadcast television, social media, communications, digital media, marketing, and design
  • Strong interest in creating content on emergent social media platforms

Growth & Development Opportunities:

  • Get an inside look at how a nationally-awarded production goes from guest applications to broadcast
  • Learn the pre- and post-production and marketing requirements for network television
  • Assist in social media and online community engagement and promotion
  • We hope to support the development and implementation of an idea you want to bring to the team! Bring your unique passions to the table and we will find the path that fits for you and your growth.
