Our science community consists of a group of a experts who are leading the industry on multiple fronts to bring science, strategy and action together. The Marine Scientist will be part of a small team of multi-disciplinary staff working towards achieving The Nature Conservancy’s marine conservation goals in New York and along the Atlantic coast. The successful Marine Scientist candidate will join the Nature Conservancy’s New York Oceans and Great Lakes fisheries team and Nature Conservancy marine practitioners along the east coast and across North America to provide scientific expertise to help ensure renewable offshore energy development in the Atlantic is compatible with healthy oceans, and to help advance ecosystem-based approaches to marine fishery management. The Marine Scientist will work in with The Nature Conservancy’s NY government relations, science, communications, and philanthropy teams. We are looking for a collaborator and problem solver with excellent people skills and experience building effective partnerships. The successful candidate will synthesize existing scientific knowledge and build partnerships to generate new knowledge applicable to (1) informing the avoidance, minimization, and or mitigation of potential environmental impacts of offshore energy development to marine life and habitats, and (2) advancing ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management for state, interstate, and federally managed fisheries in the Mid-Atlantic. They will collaborate with members of the commercial, for hire, and recreational fishing communities, university scientists, fisheries managers, energy developers, regulatory agencies, and others to identify and resolve technical issues and widely communicate solutions and best practices. We appreciate collaborative approaches and encourage innovative ideas and recommendations. The ideal candidate will have a background and track record that includes: Minimum of master’s degree in marine fisheries, oceanography, marine ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, statistics or related field and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience collecting, synthesizing, interpreting, and communicating statistical or scientific information and diverse data sets. Experience preparing reports of findings. Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams. Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners. Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people. Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
