Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Assistant Head to join the David Rumsey Map Center to provide outreach and manage projects related to the Center. The Center's collections include the David Rumsey Map Collection, Maps of Africa, Glen McLaughlin's collection of Maps of California as an Island, and other historical maps and atlases. The Center is a world class facility that collocates physical items and their digital surrogates allowing researchers to display and interrogate them in multiple ways adding unique value to the scholarship of cartographic material. The Center boasts large high resolution video walls, a touch screen and an Apple Vision Pro, as well as a flexible space to support its programs and has one of the largest number of maps openly available online in high resolution in the world. In addition to being a teaching and event space, the Center has large areas to display maps and atlases in which two map related exhibitions are mounted a year. The Center is deeply engaged in collecting, cataloging, scanning, and providing access to the rare physical items and its digital collections in interesting and innovative ways. About the Position:
The person in this public facing position will work closely with the Head of the Center to leverage its technology to teach classes and workshops, support research, and run the exhibition program at the Center. They will work with other geospatial and map staff to bring to light new and existing collections for use by scholars at Stanford and beyond. The incumbent will work closely with the Head and Curator to stay abreast of trends in cartographic information and will be a forward thinking, technologically savvy individual that is willing to partner with their colleagues to experiment with non-traditional ways of incorporating cartographic knowledge in the academy.
Core Duties*:
* Teach classes, workshops, and give tours which demonstrate the Center's collections, technology, and areas of support.
* Publish bibliographic, reference, and display resources such as topical research guides and online tutorials.
* Assist patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by providing research consultations and staffing the reference desk.
* Under the direction of the Head and Curator, and with the help of the Center Services Support Technology Specialist, design and run the physical and digital exhibition program.
* Represent the David Rumsey Map Center on committees and working groups internal and external to Stanford Libraries.
* Participate, along with their colleagues, in looking beyond traditional fields of study to discover, experiment, prototype and bring to fruition new and innovative ways to incorporate cartographic data and information in scholarship.
* Recommend print and electronic material for acquisitions.
* Continually seek out knowledge of new and emerging trends and technology that could be adapted for leveraging cartographic data and information, such as attending conferences, workshops, and through other professional development activities.
* Assist in the coordination and running of the Center's events, including conferences.
* Supervise teaching and educational staff including casual/temporary student employees.
* Other grant-based or special projects as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
* Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries, cartography, and spatial thinking or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
* Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.
* Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
* Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments, office automation software, and online resources.
* Ability to quickly learn and use print and online tools and resources and in area of specialization.
* Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills
Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include:
* Demonstrated experience with outreach, teaching, or public service in a library setting.
* Evidence of successful project management skills, including around the design and implementation of physical and digital exhibitions.
* Background working with maps or spatial data.
* Knowledge of geospatial software and applications, such as desktop GIS, and storytelling tools.
* Experience and familiarity with best practices in the handling of rare materials.
* Familiar with web publishing and digital exhibition platforms such as Omeka, Wax Minicomp, Jekyll, etc.
* Experience with relevant emerging technologies in map and spatial information libraries, including the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF).

Work Standards:
The expected pay range for this position is $73,000 to $92,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
